There may be times you need to create multiple versions of the same assessment - resulting in assessments with similar questions at different difficulty levels. Use the Scaled grade type in assessments to standardize scoring across assessments by assigning scaled values to the points awarded for questions within an assessment. Learners can then achieve the same passing score, regardless of which version of the assessment they take.

This article provides an overview of the Scaled grade type and walks you through creating an assessment with Scaled scoring enabled.

Scaled Scoring | Overview

The Scaled grade type for assessments lets you assign a specific, scaled value to the points awarded for assessment questions in an assessment. A learner earns a scaled score for an assessment by correctly answering assessment questions and amassing associated points.

Scaled scoring requires a passing threshold be set for each assessment. The passing threshold determines if a learner has successfully passed the assessment - by correctly answering questions - based on the scoring scale you've created.

Because the scaled values you add are mapped to the points awarded for correctly answering questions, complete the following steps in order when creating a new assessment with a Scaled grade type:

1.) Create your assessment questions and assign point values

A learners scaled score is based on the number of points they earned by correctly answering questions in an assessment. Before you can add scaled values, your questions, and their point values, are required to be able to set up your scaled scoring table options.

For example: an assessment with five questions valued at 2 points each offers learners a point total of 10 points. Similarly, an assessment with eight questions valued at 1 point each, and one question valued at 2 points also offers a point total of 10 points.

2.) Define a scoring scale

You'll need to define a scoring scale for your assessment(s). You can customize the scale to your need using numerical values. Generally speaking, the scaled score should increase as points are earned - see below:

3.) Determine a Passing Threshold

The passing threshold tells the platform that a learner has earned a high enough scaled score to pass the assessment. The value used for a passing threshold should correlate to your scoring scale and should be the minimum score required to pass the assessment.

4.) Select the Scored grade type for the assessment

When you set an assessment's grade type to Scaled, you'll be asked to provide your scaled score values and a passing threshold value.

Follow these steps to create an assessment with scaled scoring:

Navigate to Content in the admin nav panel and create a new assessment.
Once created, add your assessment questions and assign point values to each question.
